Festive clothing fails for boring reasons — it itches, it is too warm, or it cannot be undone quickly when a bathroom is needed urgently.

Line everything

Raw silk and zari are beautiful and abrasive. A cotton lining between the fabric and the skin is the single change that keeps a child in an outfit past the first hour.

Elastic over drawstrings

A drawstring that a five-year-old cannot retie alone becomes your problem four times in an evening. Flat elastic with an internal button adjuster solves it.

Pack the change of clothes anyway

Everyone knows this. Almost nobody does it. The photographs happen in the first hour regardless.

Raw cotton shrinks. Depending on the weave it can lose three to seven percent of its length the first time it meets hot water — which is how a size that fit in the shop stops fitting after a weekend.

What pre-washing does

We wash and dry the fabric before it is ever cut. The shrink happens on our floor rather than in your machine, and the size on the label stays the size in the drawer.

The side effect we like

Pre-washed cotton is softer on day one. It also takes dye more evenly, so the colour you see in the photograph is closer to the colour that arrives.

The cost

It adds roughly nine percent to our fabric bill and two days to production. We have decided repeatedly that it is worth both.

The trick is not speed. It is removing every decision that can be argued with before the child is awake.

Lay it out the night before

Two options, both acceptable to you, placed on the chair. The choice is real, which is the point, but neither answer costs you anything.

Buy for the fastening, not the photograph

Envelope necks, side ties and front openings are the difference between forty seconds and four minutes. Anything that has to go over a head at speed will be resisted at speed.

Let the shoes be the last thing

Shoes signal leaving, and leaving is the part being negotiated. Everything else goes on first, calmly, and then the shoes appear by the door.
